Twist braids are individual braids that use the twisting technique instead of braiding. They will look very similar to micro braids or box braids in the end. You can have them thinner or thicker and you can also use hair extensions to perform them.
How To Twist Hair
If you don’t already know how to do individual braids maybe you will like to have a look at our tutorials. Another useful tutorial for you is the rope braids tutorial which are also twist braids but much bigger as they use all the hair in one braid.
A. Section your hair
The first step to do twist braids is to section your hair in small pieces, exactly like for individual braids – we already have a tutorial about how to do individual braids where you can see a step by step presentation.
B. Start twisting the first strand
Case I. Twist braids with natural hair
Start with a small hairpiece from one side of your head -usually next to your ear. Take the strand, and separate it in two small pieces. Twist each of them separately, in the same direction, for a while, then twist them together and repeat until you reach the end. Finish by securing with an elastic band.
Case II. Twist braids with extensions
If you are twisting with extensions you are going to use the same technique as above, except the you are adding a small strand from your extension to each of your natural hairpiece.
It goes like this:
Take a small hairpiece from one side of your head and separate it into two thin strands.
Take a very thin strand from your extensions pack and bend it in the middle to form two parts.
Each part of the hair extension is going to be attached to each part of your hairpieces, (with the middle part of the extension close to the edge).
Now you have again two parts of hair (a mix of natural hair and extension strands) – start twisting each part in the same direction, then twist them together to form an individual braid. Finish by securing with an elastic band.
C. Continue the process
Continue like this with all pieces of your hair, taking small strands of your hair one by one.
